1. Ipanema Decking Handling:
Ipanema hardwood decking is kiln-dried to an average of 15% MC and is intended ONLY for exterior use. Ipanema decking should be stored away from direct sun light and should be allowed to acclimate to local moisture levels before being installed.
2. Cutting and Drilling:
Use only high-quality drills or saws that are equipped with premium carbide tipped saw blades or power tool bits on Ipanema Decking products. Edge boards should be pre-drilled on faces and screwed to the joists to insure extra strength of the structure if a fastening system is not going to be used.
3. Board End Sealing:
Ends should be sealed immediately after cross-cutting using a clear aqueous wax end-sealer to reduce any end-checking.
4. Fastening of Ipanema decking:
High-density plastic, coated metal or stainless steel fasteners, along with stainless steel screws, are highly recommended due to their corrosion resistance and their holding strength. Coated metal are less durable and may stain the wood so are not recommended. There are a number of hidden clip systems available and whether to use them or not is a matter of personal preference only. Your sales rep at San Antonio Wholesale Decking will be happy to assist you in your selection of fasteners.
5. Decking Installation:
All of the standard decking sizes – 5/4 x 6, 5/4 x 4, 1 x 6 and 1 x4 decking can be installed on 16" on-center joists, but always be sure to do so under the regulations of your local building codes. 5/4 x 6 can be installed on 24" on-center joists also. Using a diagonal pattern installation will require shorter joist spacing. A gap of approx. 1/8" is the normal distance to leave between boards for air circulation and movement of the wood during seasoning.
6. Finishing:
Ipanema Decking arrives from the factory pre-finished all four sides along with a high-end coating for extra-protection and durability. Re-finishing your decking with a good, recommended commercial coating purchased from a reputable merchant like San Antonio Wholesale Lumber will be required as soon as the wood starts to fade or change from its original color. Do not let your decking turn gray as this is the first sign of decay - it means that surface cells are being damaged by UV rays of the sun - and the surface cells will then permit water penetration.
